A beautiful and flat course located on the banks of the world-famous
Loch (Lake) Lomond. A vast area of 600 acres (equivalent to 60 big football
stadiums) is sandwiched between lakes and mountains. There are 46 kinds
of trees that cover the entire course, offering a unique habitat for many
wildlife animals. The GOLF Magazine included the 5th, 6th, and 10th holes
as part of its 500 Best Golf Holes in the 2000 edition. While these holes
are exceptionally noteworthy, all other holes of this course are quite
impressive in their own way. Loch Lomond will come into play on 5 holes.
The course takes care of good maintenance of the greens, fairways, and trees.
The routing is also good to make the most of the natural terrain, and players
might feel the designer is producing 18 consecutive dramas. The direction
of the wind is the same only for holes 2 and 3, 6 and 7, 8 and 9. Most of
the holes on this course consist of a different layout. The Scottish Open
was held at Loch Lomond every year between 1996 and 2010. The clubhouse,
Rossdhu Mansion, was built in 1773 and used by one of the Scottish Clans,
Colquhoun.

A dogleg to the left. Off the tee shot, players will encounter a bush
to the left and three fairway bunkers to the right. Hitting towards the
left side of the wide fairway will be the best angle to the green. The
approach will require the ball to be hit over a stone wall. A large and
deep bunker protects the left side of the green. The green is shared with
the fourth hole.

A beautiful hole with trees surrounding both sides of the hole and a
dogleg to the left. It is possible to hit the green in 2 as the hole is
gently downhill. Off the tee a large fairway bunker on the left comes
into play, but aiming towards this direction close to the bunker will
be important because hitting from the left side gives the best angle to
the green on the second shot. The left-sloping green is protected a lake
and a bunker located immediately to the left side, and a pond placed on
the right side. The green is also guarded by a bunker to the left. This
would be considered a typical “risk and reward” hole.

A signature hole and a picturesque par three over a bush with a splendid
lake and distant mountains behind the green. The green is a long and narrow,
two-tiered with the lower back, and is protected by hour bunkers. The large
sand on the left is particularly foreboding, forcing players to scramble
for par. GOLF Magazine 2000 (the latest edition) selected as part of its
World's 500 Best Holes. |

|
A relatively straight and very long par 5 with a lake that spreads to
the right. The fairway is wide on both off the tee and second shots. Off
the second, players will encounter a large cross bunker located 150 yards
in front of the green. While it is the best to hit over the bunker, average
hitters need to lay up short of the bunker onto the left side of the fairway
that tilts toward trees on the right side. The green is long, elevated,
and surrounded by a lake to the right and bunkers on both sides. Two trees
strategically placed on front ride side of the green that makes the approach
interesting and challenging. GOLF Magazine 2000 (the latest edition) selected
as part of its World's 500 Best Holes.

A par four with a gently downhill tee shot and a dogleg bend around a
lake to the right. A large bunker guards the right and the front ride
sides of the green. Furthermore, a lake is located right behind the green,
making accuracy an essential play off the approach.

|
A very beautiful and difficult par four with a slight dogleg to the left.
A creek crosses the fairway between the 290 to 300 yards from teeing ground.
Driving the left half of the wide fairway will give better angle to the
green. The approach shot is over a pond that borders the left side of the
long green. The green has a bunker to left and a creek behind as well. The
green slopes down from the center to the rear, increasing the overall difficulty
when the pin position is at the back. GOLF Magazine 2000 (the latest edition)
selected as part of its World's 500 Best Holes. |

|
A long par three with a gentle uphill. The green is angled, 45-yard deep,
and concave in the middle. There are a large and deep bunker running from
the front to the left sides of the green, and a small bunker that is located
behind. |
|
|
A difficult par five with a dogleg to the left and bushes running along
both sides. With a downhill tee shot, players should be careful of the
six fairway bunkers on both the left and right sides. The second shot
is over a creek onto the narrow landing area protected by additional fairway
bunkers. The green is long & narrow with a large greenside bunker
to the left.

|
|
The short par four with a dogleg to the right, and a nice risk & reward
hole. A long hitter will be drivable par 4, however, there is a risk as
a creek flows from the left to front sides of the green. The green is a
two-tiered and severely sloped. This Rory Mcllroy hit the green in one shot
with a 3-wood in a tournament. |
|
|
A par four with a slight dogleg to the right. On the tee shot, there
are trees and bushes surrounding the left and right sides of the wide
fairway, and a large bunker on the left located 280 yards from the teeing
ground. With a two-tiered horizontally wide green with a strong step,
approaching it will be difficult as the front and back sides are guarded
by bunkers. Additionally, there is a creek that runs also alongside the
back of the green.

|
A very long par four with a sharp dogleg to the left. There’s a creek
that crosses just in front of the green, making distance and accuracy
an important factor off the second shot. Playing from the Blue tee, rather
than from the Champion tee, will increase the total length to 515 yards.
However, this also converts the hole to a par five making it easier.

A beautiful par three that overpasses a field of heather. There is a lake
located to the left side of the green. The green is long and protected by
four bunkers. |

Tom Weiskopf is American and Loch Lomond is the first American designed
course built in Scotland. He designed mainly in the US, and I played Double
Eagles Club in Ohio, Forest Dune GC in Michigan and The Rim GC in Arizona,
all of which are excellent courses. In Asia, The
country Club in the Philippines, and The East and The West Course
at The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula in China are highly rated, too.
