A signature hole in which the fairway is divided into two
by a creek. Off the tee shot, players will notice that approaching the fairway
on the right can shorten the overall distance of the hole. However, with
the creek on the left and a forest on the right, players must also keep
into account for a narrow fairway. Most choose the left wide fairway, and
then the hole will become a double dogleg, first turning to the right before
bending again to the left. With an over-the-creek second shot, players should
pay particular attention to the left pond and the semi-blind fariway bimkers.
The green is wide and elevated. |

|
|
|
An over-a-pond par three with the wide green facing the pond on its left. |
|
|
A dogleg to the right. The tee shot is gently uphill that requires four
cross-bunkers. While the bunker on the far right seems visibly near, it
will actually require some good distance into negotiate with, especially
if the uphill is taken into account. With a strong uphill second shot, players
must also take into account the two very deep bunkers in the front left,
and the steep slope that leads up to the front of the green. These challenges
make it important to choose the right club to reach the green directly.
However, since there is a bush that lies behind the green, players also
should be careful not to hit over the green. |
|
|
A straight hole with an uphill tee shot. If the tee-shot surpasses over
250 yards, players will encounter a steep downward slope, in which the ball
will continue to roll an additional some 40 yards. However, if the ball
stops on that slope it will become a demanding second shot, as players must
then hit from the downhill lie onto the elevated green protected by five
deep bunkers on its front. It is either the long second shot from the uphill
lie or the short one form the downhill lie, depended on the distance off
the tee. |
|
|
A long and tough hole with a slight dogleg to the right. With a slightly
downhill tee shot, players should look out for a bunker and trees on the
left side. The green is wide and elevated, and protected by three bunkers. |
|
|
An almost straight hole. With an over-the-pond tee shot, players
will also encounter a narrow fairway with a pond on the left and trees on
the right. With an uphill second shot, the fairway bunkers on the left and
right come into high effect. The green is vertically long and is guarded
by a bunker on its right. |
|
|
|
|
A dogleg to the left with a pond spreading to the left. A long hitter can
carry the ball close to the green since it is a straight 300-yard distance
off the tee by completely cutting the dogleg. However, the players should
be careful of the right to left balls as there is a pond on the left side.
The green is narrow and 50 yards deep, with a bunker both in front and at
the rear. |
|
|
A dogleg to the right with a pond on the left bordering both the fairway
and the green. Off the tee shot, there are a fairway bunker on the right
and the pond on the left, thus limiting the landing area. When you avoid
the water on the left of the deep green too much, a bunker guarding the
right side of the green comes into play. |
|
|
A beautiful island green. The green is 50-yard long, slopes down gently
from the green center to back, and is surrounded by seven bunkers. |
|
|
A difficult par four with a left bending dogleg. The best route off the
tee is to hit over the bunker located on the left corner. The green is elevated
and is guard by bunkers both in front of and to the right of the wide green.
If the pin position located at the far right, the right bunker will guard
the front of the green. |

The course is about a 20 minutes car ride from Nanjing city and 50 minutes
ride from the airport. I recommend players to stay at the Sofitel Zhongshan
Golf Resort Nanjing, located just 9 miles from the city center. The golf
course is not only adjacent to this hotel, but its clubhouse is located
inside the resort.
The lighting facility is available to play at night, but only in summer.
You can see the Sofitel hotel lighted up behind the green while playing
the No. 18 hole, which results in a beautiful view. In the evening, I managed
to catch a glimpse of a wedding ceremony that took place at the golf course
from the hotel lobby. It was such a spectacular view to see a wedding on
the course at night.
Other courses designed by Gary Player in China include: Sand
River (深圳砂河) GC, Suzhou Jinji Lake International
(蘇州金鶏国際) GC, Zhaoqing (肇慶) R&GC, etc.
In Hong Kong, he is known to have designed Kai
Sai Chau GC.
I recommend eating dinner at the Bellini Italian Bar Restaurant, located
in the city. It seems to be a popular place amongst Westerners living in
Nanjing. |
